Creative with Flowers - # 19 - Two Pink Chrysanthemums

Let me set the scene. You are just home from a long day of being on your feet - kick off your shoes, grab a cup of herbal tea and a good book. Sit down in a favourite chair - made even more comfortable with a cushion and a warm blanket - and NOW you can also enjoy the flowers you made earlier!

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As usual my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

What could be simpler than two different pink chrysanthemums in an old apothecary jar. The jar is a little chipped and the lid is missing but that has never stopped me making use of it.

I've used two pink colours - but twice as many stems of the darker colour with just a few of the lighter pink to lift the whole colour scheme.

The chair is a Lloyd Loom chair from the 1930's - in it's original colour! The cushion is made from a vintage patchwork quilt. Both the cushion and the chair are almost perfectly matching the flowers.

The book is by Nessa Buonomo and is called Tables fleuries. Nessa is a florist and she writes the blog La Mariee aux Pieds Nus. This is her third book and if you are wondering - and yes, it's only so far published in french. She makes lovely flower arrangements - a little wild country style and very beautiful.

Creative with Flowers - #18 - Pink and Green Hydrangea

This week on 'Creative with Flowers' we are taking a look at some deep pink and green hydrangea that also has petals with curled edges - so a little bit different.

I rather like the two toned flower heads and the slightly curled edges of the petals.

Combining them with a neutral background and a few also neutral bits and pieces - was a must. The flowers themselves are quite strong in colour and I wanted them to stand out.

I have faintly picked up the pink in the flowers by using a cushion and a vintage bowl with some pink in them in the background.
The vintage apothecary jars are filled with mother-of-pearl buttons from my grandmother and the ball of cut and torn rags are also from my grandmother's house. They did that before weaving it into rag rugs. I can't believe this ball of rags is still around!!

Creative with Flowers - # 17 - Purple Lisianthus

Lisianthus is an extremely popular and very pretty flower - and it can last for up to two weeks. Pretty good!

A close up of the delicate flower, some buds of different maturity and a few of the grey-green slender leaves - twisting and turning.

This time I have used three new contemporary vases. They are all fairly small and of three different material and colour. One clear glass, one black and one white. What links them are that they all have some kind of surface texture on the sides of the vases and they are all neutral in colour - not taking anything away from the flowers.

I have tied a piece of ribbon around the narrow neck of the glass vase. It's a dark purple stitched grosgrain ribbon from Jane Means' ribbon collection and it matches the purple flowers perfectly.

To make the most of this lovely flower: handle with care - the petal can easily mark and the stems can easily snap.

So from the same bunch I have made three slightly different arrangements. A low and tight arrangement with the stems cut very short, in the small black vase. A medium sized looser arrangement in the clear glass vase and a taller and compact one in the white vase.

I love how the buds sits above the flowers giving the arrangements lots of texture and movement.

During the summer mix with Scabious, Nigella or Freesia.

Great flower to use for arrangements to be placed on tables, in windows and on mantelpieces.

Creative with Flowers - # 16 - Early Autumn Colours

Autumn is sneaking up on us - even though here in London it's still high temperatures - hotter than it's been all summer.

I bought this beautiful bouquet of flowers last week from my floral friend Cel Robertson, who owns the organic flower farm in Norfolk, called Forever Green Flower Company.

I found Cel's combination of flowers, foliage and grass just perfect for this time of year. Still full of 'summer' but with bits of 'autumn' sneaked in.

In the bouquet is a lovely combination of fresh white Alstroemeria, Lysimachia and Limonium or Statice as its also called. Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' has interesting dark foliage. The beautiful delicate grass Panicum virgatum adds movement and in the middle is some deep purple Verbena.

I have added a Swedish rag rug that used to be my grandmothers and on top are some old and well read books.

On a black Mexican plate is a collection of beads and two rolls of garden twine in similar colours to the beads.

Creative with Flowers - # 15 - Pink and Purple Stock Flowers

Stock flowers, also called Matthiola, is a highly fragrant cottage garden favourite.

We are this time taking a look at how to make a large abundant arrangement using a mix of pink and purple stock.

Oh, all those pretty, pink, and delicate flowers!

Two different purple colours - all from my local farmer's market.

I have used a white vase that I recently found at a charity store for very little money. The outside has a interesting heavily textured surface.

It's not old but I guess someone just didn't want it anymore and handed it in to the charity store. And then I came along and liked it.....! So now I have a fabulous "new" prop vase to use for my flower arrangements.

I wanted to make the arrangement look as big as possible without mixing in any other flowers or foliage.

What I did was to keep as many of the leaves as I could - to help it look full and generous.

The flowers are quite delicate and can easily fall off their little stems however careful you are.

Don't throw them away! Gather them up and do what I have done here. Put them in a small bowl with a little bit of water and let the flowers float on the surface.

One last little bit of practical advice: Cut away any white parts at the bottom of the stems as they will not take up water.
