Flowers and Ribbons - # 5 - Jars with Ribbons - Part 2



Over time you have probably noticed that I often feature beautiful ribbons. I'm part of a team of international bloggers who use ribbons from Jane Means' ribbon collection. Jane provides us with ribbons and we use them in some of our blog posts. 

I'm now doing a regular series of blog posts called 'Flowers and Ribbons' where I use Jane's ribbons in combination with flowers and foliage.


This is Part 2 of 'Jars with Ribbons' - you can see Part 1 here if you missed it.

Again we are taking a look at a simple way of creating stunning little flower arrangements using pretty flowers, ribbons and re-cycled jam jars as vases. Quick and easy and for very little money!


Old jam jars are perfect for making low and compact flower arrangements. Cut the stems quite short, let the flowers rest on the edge of the jars and fill the jars with as many flowers that will fit.


Just like in Part 1 I have kept the colour scheme very tight. This time around its all white with a few hints of green.

I have used pure white single tulips, green and white parrot tulips and a white hyacinths.


There are five jars altogether - one has the all white tulips on their own, one has the white hyacinths also on their own, a third is filled with the green and white parrot tulips and a fourth is filled with a mixture of the two tulips. In the last one has snipped off little individual hyacinth flowers floating in water.

The ribbons are a mix of stitched, striped and two sweet little gingham narrow ribbons and amazingly they all pick up the colours in the flowers.

Use the jars on their own or grouped together on a little tray or try them in a row in the middle of a table or along a mantelpiece.

This month we are taking a look at a simple way of creating stunning little flower arrangements using pretty flowers, ribbons and re-cycled jam jars as vases. Quick and easy and for very little money!

I have kept to a tight colour scheme using pink double tulips and pink and white ranunculus in one jar.


In the other one I have used the same pink tulips again with some pure white single tulips and and a green and white parrot tulip.

The ribbons are from Jane Means' ribbon collection - one has pink stripes and the other has pink stitching, in two different pink colours, along the edges.

The two arrangements work very well together on a coffee or side table as well as perfect side by side on a mantle piece. Or use them separately with some colour coordinated props picking up the colour in the flowers.

FLOWERS by ingrid and titti - White Flowers for the Table



The theme for this weeks FLOWERS - is 'White Flowers for the Table'. I decided to do a table setting using the two key words in the theme as inspiration - white and table. So I gathered together a whole lot of different white objects, some clear glass as well as the added touches of silver and green.


The flowers I'm using are all white - roses, parrot tulips and hyacinths - even though the flowers are white there are a lot of added green in them - buds, stalks, leaves and multi-coloured petals. 



I put everything out on a table just to see what it all looked like together - white napkins with little black touches, heirloom wine glasses and silver plated cutlery, some small vases, Marimekko tealight holders and IKEA plates. 

An interesting mix of old and new - newly bought or handed down from older generations.  


As a little finishing touch I made a very small bundle of pussy willow and tied it with some natural raffia. I placed it on the napkin next to the cutlery just as a little reminder that spring is soon here!


Below is the final table setting inspired by the theme 'White Flowers for the Table'. 

Easy, quick and simple - with the tealight and the flowers pulling it all together and bringing it to life.

Floral Media - Inspired by Spring from McQueens Flowers



More and more spring flowers as well as many flowering branches are starting to appear. Today I'm featuring an inspiring short video from the London florist McQueens Flowers.

The flowers they used are forsythia with their classic yellow flowers, twisted branches of corkscrew hazel and simple white tulips.

They have used two different kind of clear glass vases - three tall cylinders with straight sides and four slightly smaller also cylinders but with curved sides with a narrower opening at the top.

In the lower curved vases they put just a small amount of water and then one branch of yellow flowering forsythia. The branches are cut down so that they sits inside the vase  - just barely sticking up above the edge. So the whole thing is viewed through the glass.

The other arrangement in the taller cylinders is filled with the same amount of water and then they've combined one cut-down branch of hazel with white tulips. Again most of the hazel sits low in the vase just sticking up above the rim of the vase a little bit. 

There are three tulips in each vase joining the hazel. All the leaves are removed and they are cut at three different lengths giving interest and movement behind the glass.

This shows how to use classic spring flowers and branches in a very modern and contemporary way.

All the vases are grouped together making a strong spring-like statement.

This is a lovely arrangement that is quick and easy to make. Just follow the simple instructions and you'll have one for your table!!

Flowers of the Month - December 2015

2 December - DIY Flower Tips and Inspiration - White Amaryllis
It's the end of December and I'm here again with 'Flowers of the Month' - where I'm featuring all the different flowers and floral arrangements I have posted during the month of December.     A Bunch for the Weekend - # 66 - White Tulips and White Hyacinths



    'A Bunch for the Weekend' this week is a combination of white tulips and white hyacinths.


    How To: 

    You'll need:

     - 20 stems of white tulips.

    -  7 stems of hyacinths.

    - 2 vases or containers - in clear glass or white. In this case I have used a white vintage apothecary jar and a clear glass pickling jar.

    - as props I have used white and grey honeycomb pompoms in three different sizes, a small bowl of Christmas tree baubles in white, silver and grey and a white fabric with a shiny pattern. 

    For conditioning the flowers - you'll also need:

    - a pair of florists scissors
    - a florist bucket filled with fresh water

    Condition the flowers by removing any leaves that would end up below the water line in the vase. This is to reduce any growth of bacteria from any deteriorating leaves - at the same time remove any broken or bruised leaves.

    Cut the stems at a sharp angle - this is to increase the surface area and therefore increase water absorption.

    Put the cut flowers in a clean container with fresh water and leave in a cool place over night or at least for a few hours, to let the flowers absorb the maximum of water, before making the final arrangement.

    You might have to re-cut the stems while making the final arrangement to suit the size of the vase or container and to get the right proportions.



    Method: 

    - Keep as many leaves on the tulips as you can - it's nice to have some green as a contrast in this arrangement. Also keep the stems as long as possible. I have used a container with quite high sides - to keep the tulips contained. I wanted the white tulip flowers to sit closely together and not flop over and become more like dots in space.

    - I bought the hyacinths as cut flower and when you buy them they come with part of the bulb still attached to the end of the stem. Usually you should keep the bulb-bit - but in this case as I wanted to use a clear glass container - I cut the bulb-bit off to give the whole arrangement a neater look. 

    - The hyacinth flowers should sit right above the edge of the container that also holds the flowers nicely together as a bunch.



    For anybody that is not going down the red and green or gold and silver route for Christmas - this arrangement would be lovely for both Christmas and for celebrating the New Year.



    Both flowers are long lasting and even more so if you can put them in a cool place at night. The hyacinths in particular last for a very long time.

    The fresh white flowers is a welcome rest from all the bright colours of Christmas and the scent from the hyacinths is also lovely at this time of year.
