Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Spring Containers

It has been a long and cold winter and spring and we are all fed up and want the cold to go away!

In my mind it's already spring and I'm determined to stick to that - so here are some spring images from my Flickr group Flowers and Vintage.

While I was compiling this post and trying to choose from the over 5.000 images in the group, I realised that, apart from the spring theme, there was another theme running through the photos and that was the choice of containers. None of them are what you would call traditional vases - instead they are a lovely mix of glass jars, a wooden box, a milk pail, a jug, a teapot and some metal containers.

Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Easter

It's soon Easter holiday so I thought it would be nice to provide some inspiration for some Easter flower arrangements from all the talented photographers in my Flickr group Flowers and Vintage. 

We associate Easter with spring and warmer weather even though this year most of Europe has snow right now!  It's also the beginning of a new season with lots happening in the garden. 

White and yellow are the dominating colours of flowers at this time of year. Yellow is a very cheerful and welcomed colour at this time of year - but it's not loved by everybody. 

White on the other hand is liked by most people and it's easy to match or contrast with other colours. 

In these images you will also see a lot of pastel colours, it's colours that pops up everywhere at the moment both in fashion and in interiors and you'll find  it's sometimes mixed with black, sometimes with bright neon colours.

Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Flowers and Interiors

This week on Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group I have chosen interior images with floral arrangements. Some images have the arrangements just sitting on tabletops or shelves others show whole rooms with the flowers being a small but important part of the interiors.

The arrangements are all simple - not complicated, expensive or over-worked and they all complement the interiors.

Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Carnations

In her book At Home With Flowers, the late Jane Packer said about carnations: "The flowers aren't particularly special, but the secret is to buy and arrange them en masse to make an impact."

Nikki Tibbles says the same in her book Wild At Heart: "Often thought of as "no" rather than "now" flowers, red carnations earn their place in a serene setting when moulded into soft domes and set in grey ceramic vases. Used en masse, the flower heads dissolve into a soft study of colour and form."

Carnations has for a long time for many people not been a popular cut flower to use and have had a bad reputation despite the fact that they are long-lasting, offer good value for money and come in many different colours. 

Many florists have now started to use carnations again and then often uses them en masse.  Or just put a few in a small vase like in most of these images. I think combined with the right vase they look rather sweet.

Carnations, pinks and Sweet Williams are all part of the same genus Dianthus and there are hundreds of species. As cut flowers carnations come as 'bloom carnations' and 'spray carnations' and they are available all year around.

Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Ranunculus

Ribbon from Jane Means collection.

That Ranunculus is a big favourite is no surprise. Its a romantic, delicate and feminine flower that appeals to most people.

The author and gardener Sarah Raven says: "Everyone loves these as cut flowers and they're good in the garden too." 

The flower has whorls of petals that are like tissue-paper and arching long stems. They look best when they are fully opened but they are all right to buy in bud and let them develop in the vase. 

As a cut flower Ranunculus last for about a week, they are not happy in floral foam so should be placed in a vase with plenty of space.

Ranunculus come in a wide variety of colours - pink, red, yellow, orange, white, purple, apricot, even green, as well as multi-coloured and they come as single or double flowers. Flowering season is usually from January till May.

Flowers and Vintage Flickr Group - Cherry Blossoms

Soon very soon the cherry trees and some other trees will start to blossom and it's something that a lot of us are looking forward to.

Most of us will enjoy the blossoms on the bare tree branches and even if we had a flowering cherry tree in our garden we would be quite reluctant to cut branches from it. The shape of the tree would be altered and it would take a long time to grow back.

If you are lucky to have trees that you can cut a few branches from or if you can buy already cut branches - enjoy them while they last. You don't need many  - even just one branch looks wonderful. Or a few short branches in a little bud vase is perfect.   

In Japan there is a very old tradition to have a pick-nick and drink sake under cherry blossom trees while they are in flower.

Yes, I know this is not cherry blossoms - but I liked the forsythia in the vintage glass bottle and the retro feel to the image.
