Floral Media - Video - Make Your Own Autumn Flower Arrangement

Here is a short little video from Martha Stewart's YouTube channel. It's her Senior Garden Editor, Todd Carr showing us how to make a quick and easy autumn flower arrangement.

He is using a bunch from the supermarket and transforms them into something a bit more special. The flowers he is using are a couple of different Chrysanthemums as well as some Golden Rod also called Solidago.

Todd uses a gold coloured vase that matches the colour of the flowers. He starts with the larger Chrysanthemums and then fills in with the smaller ones and the Golden Rod.

I hope you'll enjoy this short video! Have a fabulous and floral Monday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back later in the week with more floral delights.

Floral Media - McQueens Flowers Create a Simple Grouping

This time on 'Floral Media' we are taking a look at a range of beautifully pale flowers in understated pale vases. It's Rodney at the London florist McQueens', who makes five pretty flower arrangements in five different vases.

The vases vary in shape and height but are in similar colours - off-white and light grey.

The flowers he is using are very light pink almost white ranunculus, variegated pink tulips, pale pink roses and again pale pink lilac.

Keeping the vases and the flowers pale in colour but when grouped together has a lot of impact and a great amount of texture and visual variation.

Here you can have a look at some previous McQueens flower arrangements. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Enjoy the video, the vases and the flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

I'll be back on Wednesday with more floral delights from Of Spring and Summer.

Floral Media - McQueens Flowers Create with Waterford Vases

This time on 'Floral Media' we are taking a look at a range of Waterford vases. It's the head tutor Wagner, at the London florist McQueens', who makes six pretty flower arrangements in six very different vases.

These vases vary from small vases for posies to round rose vases as well as tall flared vases for larger arrangements.

It's interesting to see how different vases work so well with different flowers.

Enjoy the video, the vases and the flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

I'll be back on Wednesday with more floral delights from Of Spring and Summer.

Floral Media - Blue Flowers in Blue Jugs by McQueens Flowers

Today on Floral Media I want to show you a short video. We are taking a look at what Andrea from the top London florist McQueens Flowers is doing with blue flowers using blue containers.

Andrea is using three blue enamelled vintage jugs; they are different in size and shape but are all in almost the same clear blue colour.

The flowers and foliage he is using are blue delphiniums, Viburnum 'Roseum' or Guelder Rose, eucalyptus, blue hyacinths, Euphorbia and three potted primroses as well as a little bit of moss.

In the first tallest jug he puts some tall bright blue delphiniums - mixed with a few stems of lime green Guelder Rose and some grey green eucalyptus foliage.

The second jug he fills with blue hyacinths and some lime green Euphorbia

In the third jug he puts some potted primulas or to be exact Primula auricula. He packs three plants into the jug and covers the soil with some moss.

What great colour combinations for spring and all the little arrangements are easy, quick and simple.

Just the way I like it!!

Floral Media - Glorious Gloriosa Lily from McQueens Flowers

The London florist McQueens Flowers is back with another quick and easy flower arranging video. This time its their florist Poppy who is showing us how to arrange some Gloriosa superba lilies in a collection of three different sizes of fish bowl vases.

Poppy starts by removing all the leaves and then cutting the stems the same length. All the vases are filled with only a little bit of water. The flowers are then gently curved along the inside of the vase with the stem in water but leaving as much as possible of the flower above water level.

The larger bowls will hold between 4-6 flowers depending on size. In the small vases she cuts the stems very short and only puts one in each vase. She then arrange the vases along the table with some tealight candles and a few loose flowers on the table as a finishing touch.

A lovely and different way to display flowers in round vases - as well as being very quick and easy. Gloriosa lilies are available all year around and lasts for approximately 4-5 days.

Enjoy the video and why not try the same thing with just one vase and a few stems.

Have a lovely floral day and I'll see you later in the week with more floral arrangements, tips and inspiration.

Floral Media - Flower Agenda - week 9-12 - Freesia

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

I'm back this month with another 'Flower Agenda' - where the Flower Council of Holland feature a special cut flower every month. This month it's all about the Freesia.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

Freesia was first found in South Africa where the flower is called 'Cape-lily-of-the-valley'. It was given it's name by the South African botanist Ecklon in 1830. He named it after his friend Dr Friedrich Freese.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

The freesia are grown from tubers and they come as single or double flowers. It also comes in a wide variety of colours - white, yellow, orange, red, blue, pink and purple - as well as bi-coloured and multi-coloured. Many varieties have a beautiful sweet scent and they carry on growing in the vase.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

Here are some care tips:
- Use a clean vase and fill it with water at room temperature.
- Add flower food for a longer vase life.
- Trim the stems diagonally with a pair of sharp and clean flower scissors.
- Don't place freesias in a draught, in full sun or near central heating.
- Also don't place freesias near fruit or vegetables that emits  ethylene gas which will cause the flowers to age more rapidly.
- Remove wilted flower heads to encourage further flowering and change the water in the vase every two days.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

Traditionally a spring flower but is now available all year around and its one of the world's most popular cut flowers.

It can be used in many different ways - in bud vases with just one or a few stems in each vase. Mixed with other flower in larger bouquets where it will provide fabulous colour and texture to the whole arrangement.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

The freesia has wonderful long arching stems that gives interesting long, lovely lines and the flower buds keep opening along the stem ending at the tip in little green buds.

Bloemenagenda Freesia 2016

I hope you have enjoyed my little feature on freesias and why not try some this season yourself.

Have fun with your arranging and I will be back with another Flower Agenda next month - when I will be featuring Gerberas.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous floral day!

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

For the second year in a row I'll be doing the Flower Council of Holland's monthly information about cut flowers. Its called The Flower Agenda. I'll be covering 15 different flowers during 2016. Last month it was the Tulip and this month it's the Rose.
Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

The rose goes back to Roman, Greek and Egyptian times - but was not introduced to Europe until the 16th century.

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

The rose is often called the Queen of Flowers - it is available to buy twelve months of the year and is bought for all occasions from weddings, birthdays, Valentine's to funerals.

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

The rose comes in many different colours and shapes - red, white, yellow, pink, purple, orange and green as well as multicoloured.

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

Red roses are often associated with love - other colours have their own symbolism.

White: purity, dignity, true love.
Pink: happiness, gratitude, virtue.
Orange: longing , sympathy, longing.
Yellow: intimate friendship, solidarity

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

  • Look after your roses and they will last longer.
  • Remove any leaves that will end up below the water line in the vase.
  • Use a clean vase and fresh water.
  • Trim the stems with a diagonal cut.
  • Change water and re-cut stems every 2-3 days.
  • Don't put roses in direct sunlight, in a drought or near any source of heat.
  • Don't place roses near a bowl of fruit.

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

Roses are perfect for making classic bouquets - but they can also be combined with lots of other flowers to make something less traditional.

Bloemenagenda Roos 2016

Add lilacs, stock flowers or gerberas or like in the next two images a whole host of flowers mixed with roses to make stunning and unusual bouquets.

Floral Media - A Classic Spring Combination from McQueens Flowers

I think by now we are all longing for SPRING!! Here is a short video with a classic spring combination from the top London florist McQueens Flowers.

They have used a handmade chunky container in a neutral colour that adds contrast and texture to the whole arrangement. To start off they are using knobbly pussy willow branches as a framework to support the other flowers and keep them in place. There is quite a few but they are not too tall - in the end just tall enough to sit just above all the other flowers.

Next they have added eight blue hyacinths as well as several small bunches of blue muscari also called grape hyacinths. Last they add nine white anemones - all three flowers are evenly spread throughout the arrangement.

Remove any broken or damaged leaves on the hyacinths - but leave the bulb part at the end of the stems. The muscari usually comes with lots of it's narrow leaves mixed in with the flowers - add some of those to each little bunch.

This is a lovely little spring arrangement that is quick and easy to make. Just follow the simple instructions and you'll have one for your table!!

  Have a Lovely Floral Wednesday!

I'll be back later in the week with more floral delights from
Of Spring and Summer.

With the individual little flowers - not only can you make necklaces but you can also make napkin rings  and small garlands to decorate your table - or why not hang a mini garland around a vase of flowers or a photograph of a loved one.

I'll be back on Friday with the last 'A Bunch for the Weekend' for 2015.

Floral Media - Flower Agenda - Week 48 - 52 - Amaryllis

Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

This is the last installment for 2015 - from The Flower Council of Holland's campaign about cut flowers - it's called Flower Agenda and during the weeks 48-52 - its all about Amaryllis - used as a cut flower.

Bloemenagenda 2015 Amaryllis

Here is a little bit of information and facts about Amaryllis:

Anyone looking to discover the amaryllis's birthplace needs to travel to South, Central America and the Caribbean. This radiant flower is a descendant of the Narcissus family, and grows from a bulb. Did you know that the name 'Amaryllis' comes from the Greek word 'amarussein', which means 'sparkling' or 'radiant'?

Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

The amaryllis's petals are very unusual; they look like they're made from fabulous velvet. In terms of colour, they come in white, red, yellow, pink, salmon, purple, orange and bi-coloured.

 Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

There are usually four to six imposing flowers on the stem. The amaryllis does not have any foliage. That's why they sometimes call her the 'Naked Lady' in the United States.

Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

To enjoy amaryllis for a long time follow these tips.
•    Trim the stems diagonally.
•    Select a sturdy glass vase.
•    Make sure that the vase is nice and clean, fill it with water and use cut flower food for bulb flowers.
•    Place the vase in a reasonably cool place, not in a draught or next to the fruit bowl.

Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

Flower Agenda 2015 Amaryllis

The amaryllis symbolises pride and enchanting beauty. It expresses a feeling of friendship and affection. This is the perfect flower if you want to capture hearts.

Amaryllis:

The amaryllis combines well, and effortlessly fits into various styles. If you like simplicity, then combine amaryllis with Viburnum. If you prefer something livelier, but still restrained, make a fantastic white bouquet with amaryllis, lilac and magnolia. A robust bouquet also works well. Take a sturdy vase and place holly and amaryllis bulbs in it to create a bouquet that no-one can ignore!
