"We're used to having floral arrangements in our halls and living rooms, but people don't always think of putting flowers in the bedroom. I think it's a great shame, as even the tiniest posy of fresh flowers on the bedside table or dressing table allows you to revel in the beauty of flowers close up. You can have some fun with containers too. For this more private area of the home, I love dainty vases in sugared-almond pastels or vintage-style pressed glass - after all, one woman's kitsch is another woman's treasure!"

Florets - Floral Quote - # 118 - by The Flower Appreciation Society




"The most common hydrangea that we see at the market is the aptly named mop-head variety. These rounded, voluptuous blooms perch on long straight stems, sitting like upside-down mops in their buckets. There are other types of hydrangeas that we like to use and buy whenever we see them. These include the various lacecap varieties, as well as Annabelle (Hydrangea arborescens) and Pink Diamond ( Hydrangea paniculata). Hydrangeas can be temperamental - sometimes we find they keep their shape even when they have dried (great sprayed gold for Christmas decorations) - other times they wilt almost as soon as they come out of their packaging. We suggest putting them in a bucket of cold water immediately, giving them a good spray (again using cold water) and searing the ends. To sear the ends you can either dip it in boiling water or hold it over a flame for a few seconds."

"There are few things that add as much colour and happiness to a home as flowers - aside from family and friends, of course. I try to bring flowers into my home every week, as it makes such a difference to the way I feel and injects a sense of vitality that only flowers can achieve. Cut flowers can be expensive, but there are so many flowers growing in abundance in the garden and on common land that can make an even more beautiful bouquet than shop-bought flowers would do." "I am lucky enough to often be able to take flowers home from photoshoots that I have worked on where they have been used as props, but I also try to get out of Paris from time to time to pick some freely growing spring or summer flowers, as they are what I really prefer. The changing seasons mean that you can create different arrangements throughout the year."

Florets - Floral Quote - # 114 - Shane Connolly



"I can never decide if peonies are a spring finale or a precursor to summer. Perhaps it's because they appear in the flower markets long before they open in the cooler climate of the garden. Either way they gently blur the seasonal edges and I quite like that.

Luckily they look wonderful with the last tulips of spring or with the first flowers of summer. Or, and this is my favourite way, completely on their own.

There are few flowers so completely sumptuous, and quite frankly, as buxom, as a fully opened double peony. A wide range of beautiful colours gives them very different characters but these exquisite shell pink specimens are without doubt the refined, couture-clad princesses of the peony world."

"I tend to like combinations that either follow each other on the color wheel, like red, red-orange, and orange, or that falls on opposite sides of the wheel, like orange and blue. Successful color pairings are ones that have an unexpected twist, like coral with pink and rust, which is an alluring mix of hues. The rust is crucial in that trinity; without it the resulting floral arrangement is too sweet, it's as though your teeth will fall out just from looking at it! Florets - Floral Quote - # 111 - by Carly Cylinder



"If I had to give just one piece of advice, it would be this: Change the water in the vase at least every couple days. And if not every couple days, then at least once during the lifetime of the arrangement. Flowers thrive on fresh water. To refresh the water in a small-to-medium arrangement, place the vase under the faucet in your kitchen sink and run the water so that it flushes out the old water. Flushing out your vase under the faucet refreshes the water while keeping your arrangement intact. For taller vases, carefully tilt the arrangement to pour out the old water, and refresh with new water."

"Peonies are generous flowers. These fluffy, long-lasting blooms blossom in a range of colors - from bright white to yellow, coral, and peach, to pink and red. Herbaceous peonies die back to the ground each year and are born on new, green stems. They are especially varied, coming in single, double, and multipetaled versions that are so huge they are called "bombs". Peonies are also well-behaved blossoms, easily trimmed and, like tulips, fun to watch as their petals open and progress through a long life cycle."

"A lone flower reveals the particular shape of it's blossom and line of its stem. Vintage bottles make great showcases for individual blooms arranged along a windowsill or mantel or clustered on a table. Use a variety of bottles, both clear and tinted, to hold attractive cuttings. If grouping flowers, play with the color palette and texture. You may be attracted to a clean, modern aesthetic, a line of clear bottles with white Queen Anne's lace, or choose instead to cluster an assortment of wild daisies or black-eyed Susans in old glass inkwells that have lost their caps."
