Tiny Blooms - # 37 - Two Pompon Dahlias

Dahlias comes in many different shapes, sizes and colours. Today we are taking a look at some pompon dahlias in two different colours.

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems.

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

I love dahlias - they were out of fashion for a long time but are now back in favour and they are more popular than ever.

At this time of year my two nearest farmers markets are now selling dahlias in every colour of the rainbow.

I find it very hard to resist the temptation to buy a bunch of every colour. Well, that is never a good idea! Some dahlias only last for a few days but most last for about 5-7 days.

Enjoy the dahlias while they are around, mix a few colours or just use one colour on it's own. Leave a bit of foliage at the top to bring in some green between the big flower heads. Also keep the flower buds as a contrast and added texture - even though they might never open up if they are closed tightly.

Tiny Blooms - # 36 - Blue and White Delphiniums

Delphinium is loved both by people growing it as a cottage garden flower - as well as by slugs - but we are not going to discuss slugs here today.....

A bunch of delphiniums goes a long way - I only have five stems here and I simply put them in a tall clear glass vase with straight sides.

A row of glass bottles with just a single stem in each bottle would also look fantastic along a windowsill or mantlepiece.

These tall almost regal flowers are also soft and romantic. The flowers open from the bottom so pick stems that have open blossoms only halfway up for the longest bloom time.

You don't need to do much to delphiniums - their loose, country-garden style is very much suited to make simple quick and easy arrangements.

Tiny Blooms - # 35 - Blue Agapanthus

Hi everyone! I'm back after having taken a few weeks off from blogging and social media over the summer. What some people call a "digital detox". It's been a lovely time to completely switch off, charge up the 'batteries' and do some forward planning for the autumn.

My first floral blog post after the break is a 'Tiny Blooms' and we are taking a look at some gorgeous blue Agapanthus.

Agapanthus, also called African lily, is a remarkably good cut flower - easy to work with and longlasting.

I found these stunning blue Agapanthus at my local farmers market and they were so cheap I bought three bunches.

The flowers sit on top of strong sturdy stems and can be used in tall arrangements as well as cut down and and used in different low arrangements.

When you buy the flowers they don't come with any leaves so they are very quick and easy to condition. Try not to leave them out of water for too long as the dry out easily.

I have used a oversized glass jar combined with the long stems of the Agapanthus the whole arrangement is quite tall.

Agapanthus come in white, blue and purple. I have some white ones growing in my garden and you can see some of those in the last two images.

It's a flower you can use on their own but also mix with other tall, bold flowers such as lilies or gladioli. The flowers are elegant but can be styled in many different ways to suit different occasions.

I wanted to create a small bouquet this week for 'Tiny Blooms'. One that maybe your grand-mother would have made - a little bit old-fashioned as well as sweet and romantic.
The flower stalls are full of peonies and sweet peas, so what I got was a combination of gorgeous pink peonies and multi-coloured pink sweet peas.

I used my grandmother's cut glass vase that she gave me many years ago. At the time I was not too keen on it but now of course I love it. You often see similar at flea markets, car boot sales, loppis or charity stores.

The silver coloured jug, coffee pot and sugar bowl are old silverplated items that I've picked up from flea markets. All the silver is worn off and today has very little or no value - but are great to use as props.

The arrangement is easy to make. I made a handtied bouquet and then put it in the vase. But you can also make it straight in the vase. Mix in the sweet peas so that the little flowers sit between the large peonies. Also tuck a few around the edge of the vase.

This is a wonderful time of year with so many beautiful flowers around - so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy them during the short period that they flower.

Big blousy peonies and big round Alliums are two flowers that often flower at the same time. So why not try to combine them?

I used a vase with quite a narrow neck and used only three stems of each flower. I varied the height to give a little bit of visual variation

They are both flowers that lasts for quite a long time - so a perfect combination. The colours also work very well together and the two big round shapes and variation in texture complement each other.

It's a lovely combination that is worth trying out at this time of year. There are also many other Alliums that you can try to combine with the peonies. You only need a few stems to make an impact with these two flowers!

On a little shopping trip to my local high street I went into one of the many charity stores. I found a set of colourful vintage tumblers for £ 2.00. I'm always on the lookout for containers that can be used as vases.

At home I had some white hyacinths and I thought the combination of coloured glass and white flowers would be interesting together.

I shortened the stems and filled each tumbler with as many stems as would fit. I grouped them together and placed them where the light would shine through the colourful glass.

Another quick and easy little spring arrangement that only takes minutes to do!

I know this series of blog posts are called 'Tiny Blooms' - so why am I featuring Large Parrot Tulips. Well, if you have followed 'Tiny Blooms' - you know that it's not really always about small or tiny flowers but more about simplicity.

The lovely Cel Robertson from Forever Green Flower Company gave this bunch of parrot tulips to me last Saturday, at our local farmers' market. She was reluctant to put them on the compost heap and asked if I could make use of them. Well, my answer was of course "Yes, please"!

I removed the foliage, trimmed the stems and put them in a large clear glass, vintage pickling jar. What could be more simple?

I also added a bit of vintage lace, which made it almost look like a Dutch flower painting.

We are now heading into a period of pure pleasure when it comes to flowers. Late spring and then quickly straight into summer - or that is often what happens here in London. There is just an abundance of stunning flowers in a range of delightful colours.

I found some pretty pink peonies at my favourite flower stall and combined them with some deep purple lilacs from my garden.

I made a small hand-tied posy using three peonies and three sprigs of lilac. I secured them with a rubber band and then tied a narrow light pink ribbon from Jane Means collection of ribbons around the stems - as high up as possible.

I used a vintage laboratory clear glass jar as a vase and let the ends of the ribbon trail down the side.

Quick, easy and absolutely seasonal - for very little money.

I know I'm showing daffodils again!

I just wanted to show you another double daffodils - this time it's a gorgeous white double daffodil or Narcissus 'Erlicheer' as it's also called.

It's creamy white in colour and is excellent as a cut flower. It doesn't look like a traditional daffodil, with it's usual yellow trumpet, but is fully double so the flower looks ruffled. Some people say it resembles a carnation. As an added bonus it's also strongly scented.

The container I have used is a vintage blue jar. It's from France and was used by French polishers and contained their furniture-polish.

I have just put a few stems in the jar and didn't feel anything else was needed. Of course I have added a few vintage props - a blue painted basket and a blue-green giant glass bottle. As a rule I don't trust old ceramics or pottery - so I put a small dish under the jar just to be on the safe side and avoid any damage to wooden surfaces. The little tealight holder is contemporary.

I LOVE vintage blue and white floral china and I have to admit that I have quite a few pieces in my collection. At one point many years ago I had to stop collecting - but I'm so happy that I have it - and I use it all the time for flower arranging, styling and as props in my photographs.

In these two photographs I have combined a floral blue and white jug with bright pink and white tulips. I cut the stems quite short and took off most of the leaves and really put in as many as I could fit into the little jug.

The old jug works perfectly as a vase and the flowers sit very happily in it. The colour contrast between flowers and jug is both pretty and dramatic.

The Tiny Blooms this week are three bright pink ranunculus and some small leafed eucalyptus. I have used a vintage pastel green 1940's jug as a vase. The green looks lovely together with the strong pink ranunculus.

I started with the green eucalyptus foliage and created a framework of crisscrossed stems in the jug - that easily will support the three rather big ranunculus flowers. Vary the height a little bit to make some visual variation.

Small in size, easy to create, big impact and very long-lasting.

Muscari or as they are also called Grape hyacinths is a 'tiny bloom' usually with stems about 20 cm tall. They come in a variety of blue colours as well as white.

You can sometimes find them as cut flowers but more often you would pick them yourself in a garden. When you do just pick a small posy and leave the rest to be enjoyed where they are growing.

So what do you do with a tiny posy - well you can put all the flowers in a tiny vase or you can use small bottles with just one stem in each.

Or you can do what I have done here - make a hand-tied bouquet - tie some blue raffia around the stems - make a big bow and put the flowers in a small vase just leaning to one side - put the vase on a tile or saucer in a similar colour and you have a quick, easy and beautiful 'Tiny Blooms' flower arrangement.
